Nathan Matthews to renew appeal against sentence

We covered the case of Nathan Matthews and his partner Shuana Hoare, who were convicted of killing Becky Matthews. After their conviction, both announced that they were intending to appeal against both conviction and sentence.

This did not mean anything other than that their lawyers thought that there were grounds of challenging the conviction (see our fact sheet on how appeals work).

The Single Judge disagreed and refused permission to appeal (not actually ‘throwing it out’ as was reported).

On 1st April 2016 it was announced that Mr Matthews would be renewing his appeal, but only against the sentence that was imposed (or, strictly speaking, against the tariff of 33 years that was imposed).

It will be a while for this to come to Court for a full hearing (given the sentence then, frankly, there is little hurry). We don’t know yet whether Ms Hoare will be renewing her appeal against either conviction or sentence, but if she does then it will be heard at the same time as Mr Matthews is.

Either way, it will be reported in the press and we will be looking at it to see how accurate the reporting is.
