Lavinia Woodward appeal – Single Judge says ‘no’

We looked a few times at the case of Lavinia Woodward, the Oxford student who got a suspended sentence for stabbing her ex.

The case caused a bit of a stir in the media, and more so when it was publicised that she would be trying to appeal the sentence.

At the time we said that the outcry was perhaps not warranted and the sentence was fair enough (although we did not think that an appeal would go too far)

Well, on 27th March 2018 we learned that she had failed at the first hurdle as the Single Judge refused her permission to appeal. This isn’t the end of the line (see here for Ms Woodward’s options and how the appeal process works), but it makes the chance of her succeeding in the long run pretty small.
